Why responsive web design?

Mobile devices in vogue

For a long time now, users have not only been accessing the internet via their desktop PC. There are many different devices for surfing, shopping or researching on the internet. Around a quarter of all internet users perform these tasks exclusively via mobile devices. Devices such as smartphones, tablets, televisions, eBook readers and laptops are being used more and more frequently for surfing the Internet. As the sizes and resolutions of all these devices vary greatly, it is very important to take this into account when creating websites. Responsive websites enable optimal display and navigation of websites on all devices. This means that users can be offered a perfect online experience, regardless of the device from which they visit a website.

Interesting facts about the behavior of Internet users:

  • 25% of internet users only use the internet via mobile devices.

  • Between 2009 and 2015, the number of desktop internet users rose from 1.4 billion to 1.6 billion. In contrast, the number of mobile internet users rose from 800 million to 1.9 billion in the same period.

  • Smartphone users check their devices up to 150 times a day.

  • 46% of smartphone users have problems visiting websites that are not responsive.

  • 44% of smartphone users complain about cumbersome navigation on websites.

  • 69% of all tablet users have shopped on the internet via their tablet in the last 30 days.
